In an effort to keep campfires from turning into camp fires, this year we are formalizing what many of us take for granted. (Thanks go to the Pennsic Staff (c. 1995) for providing much of the language used below)
Rule 1: All camps must have required fire safety equipment. - - - - - One extinguisher for every five liquid-fuel flame-powered devices in camp. - - - - - Two fire buckets with water or sand for every fire pit. *** Fire blankets are encouraged. ***
Rule 2: All fire and flame sources must be attended. - - - - - Attendance in the campsite is mandatory by at least one adult capable of extinguishing the fire if necessary.
Rule 3: All fuels for flame-powered devices must be handled and used according to their manufactured safety requirements.
Rule 4: All flame-powered devices and fires must meet the following safety requirements. - - - - - Fire pits smaller than 2 ft across placed no closer than 10 ft to any structure. (Small or cook fire rule) - - - - - Fire pits larger than 2 ft across placed no closer than 20 ft to any structure. (Bonfire rule) - - - - - Elevated flame-powered light sources must be stable and located a distance equal to their height plus one foot from any structure or flammable ground cover. - - - - - When not elevated, flame-powered light sources must be placed upon bare (turned) earth or within a fire pit.
NEW FOOLS' WAR POLICY
If you want a fire in your encampment, you must demonstrate appropriate safety guidelines to the Constable staff. - Keep any sod from the fire area intact, as you will be responsible for re-sodding. - Once complete, you may receive a small, unobtrusive fire placard for a refundable $25 deposit from Troll/Constable staff. Troll will maintain a listing of which placards have been distributed to which gentle (or campsite). The placard will be placed in a visible location reasonably close to the fire. When you leave site, you will have to show that you have followed appropriate disposal guidelines and re-sod the area. Once the Constable team verifies your disposal, you may turn in your placard for your deposit to be returned. The Constable retains the power to veto fire privileges.
***If your fire becomes a safety hazard, you will lose both the privilege of having a fire and your $25 deposit.***
REMEMBER: Campfires are a privilege, not a right!!!

In accordance with Meridian Law, children under the age of twelve must be in sight or sound range of a parent or other designated adult or teen. In other words, kids must be attended! Disregard for this rule will result in expulsion from the site.
Please pay serious attention to this Law - we do take it seriously and will enforce it. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse - signs will be posted! A curfew will also be in effect.
Be aware that the Law about attended children applies everywhere on site, including activities - you must sign your children in and out. Likewise, children under twelve must be with a parent to swim in the lake.
Please remember, while there are children's activities planned, these activities are NOT a babysitting service. Be considerate of those who give their time to work with your children, and consider giving an hour of assistance, if you are able.
