Clurichaun Tournament Rules

Competitors shall challenge each other by first designating which competitor they intend to challenge by either striking the competitors billet with their weapon or having their designated person do it for them.  They shall then strike the billet designated for the list they are challenging.  The list billets will be announced on the field at the start of the tournament.

Once a challenge is announced, the competitors shall make ready.  When both competitors are ready they shall proceed to the designated list once it is available.  The challenger will notify the List Master/Mistress for that list of their names.  The competitors will then follow the direction of the List Master/Mistress until their challenge is completed.

Scoring for the lists will be as follows:

Jousting --  Shall be 3 passes.  1 point will be awarded for a hit with no break, 2 points for a hit in which the Styrofoam breaks as a result of an impact with shield or armor.  No points will be awarded for a break resulting from lance to lance contact or as an incidental contact as the lance is being rotated out of the way. Jousters should consult the judges immediately after each pass as to where the lance tip made contact with their opponent.  Should there be a tie, additional passes shall be made until the points are no longer tied.

Double Ring Tilting - Lances will be standard 10 ft. Reed Chop - Competitors shall travel 1 pass each between the standards at a gait no faster than which they are authorized.  While traveling between the standards, the competitor shall attempt to knock te reeds off of the laternatingstandards with their sword or mace for points.  Points for the reeds are as follows:  10" - 1 point, 8" -- 2 points,  6" - 3 pts, 4" - 4 pts, 2" - 5 pts.  Should there be a tie, additional passes shall be made until the points are no longer tied.

Spear Throw - Competitors shall make 3 passes at a gait no faster than which they are authorized.  The spear shall remain upright until approaching the target.  The competitors shall attempt to throw their spear into the rings painted on the target.  The points for sticking the spear in target are as follows:  3 pts for Bullseye, 2 pts for the second ring, 1 pt inside the third ring.  There shall be no score if the spear falls out of the target.

Quintain - Competitors shall travel 1 pass each at a gait no faster than which they are authorized.  Points will be awarded for striking the Quintain and for each revolution of the Quintain.

After a challenge is complete, competitors will return to the staging area.  1 point will be awarded to the winner of each challenge.  The competitor with the most points will be the winner of the Chlurichaun tournament.

The Gallery shall have "Lucky Charms" to bestow upon the Equestrians.  There will be prizes for the competitors deemed the most Chivalrous, the most Courteous, and the one who shows the most prowess as selected by the Gallery with the show of the most tokens bestowed upon them.  It is encouraged that the competitors interact with the Gallery in order to earn their favor.

1.  Any rider wishing to take a break or retire need only take their billet down from the list tree to show they are no longer available for challenge.  It should be replaced upon the rider's return to the list field.

2.  Any rider who refuses to accept a challenge in which they are authorized to compete will be considered a forfeit.

3.  Riders sharing a mount should notify the List Master so they mae allow for extra time in calling for the match.

What is a Clurichaun?

The Clurichaun is an Irish fairy which resembles the leprechaun.  Some even describe the Clurichaun as a night "form" of the leprechaun, who goes out to drink after finishing his daily chores.  Some folklorists regard them as regional variations on the same creature.

Clurichauns are said to be always drunk.  However, unlike their cousins, they are surly.  Clurichauns enjoy riding sheep and dogs at night.  If you treat them well they will protect your wine cellar.  If mistreated, they will wreak havoc on your home and spoil your wine stock.  In some tales, they act as buttery spirits, plaguing drunkards or dishonest servants who steal wine; if the victim attempts to move away from their tormenter, the clurichaun will hop into a cask to accompany them.

The Nac Mac Feegle from the Discworld book series are likely based on them.

The Clurichaun appears in the popular Irish folk ballad "The Little Skillet Pot" as recorded by the Black Family and others:  "and you'd wander down the boreen where the Clurichaun was seen, and you'd whisper loving phrases to your own dear sweet colleen."
